11When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on 2the mountain; and after He satdown, His disciplescame to Him.
2
3He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
3
"4Blessed are the poor in spirit, for 5theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4
"Blessed are 6those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5
"Blessed are 7the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
6
"Blessed are 8those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7
"Blessed are 9the merciful, for they shall receivemercy.
8
"Blessed are 10the pure in heart, for 11they shall seeGod.
9
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for 12they shall be calledsons of God.
10
"Blessed are those who have been 13persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for 14theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11
"Blessed are you when people 15insult you and persecute you, and falselysayallkinds of evilagainst you because of Me.
12
"Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for 16in the sameway they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Disciples and the World
13"You are the salt of the earth; but 17if the salt has becometasteless, how* can it be madesalty again? It is nolongergood for anything, except to be thrown out and trampledunderfoot by men.
14
"You are 18the light of the world. A cityset on a hillcannot* be hidden;
15
19nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it giveslight to all who are in the house.
16
"Let your lightshinebeforemen in such a way that they may 20see your goodworks, and 21glorify your Father who is in heaven.
17
"Do not think that I came to abolish the 22Lawor the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
18
"For truly I say to you, 23untilheaven and earthpassaway, not the smallestletterorstroke shall pass from the Lawuntilall is accomplished.
19
"Whoever*thenannulsone of the least of thesecommandments, and teachesothers to do the same, shall be calledleast24in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever*keeps and teaches them, he shall be calledgreat in the kingdom of heaven.
20
"For I say to you that unless* your 25righteousnesssurpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Personal Relationships
21"26You have heard that the ancients were told, '27YOU SHALL NOT COMMITMURDER ' and 'Whoever*commitsmurder shall be liable to 28the court.'
22
"But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before 29the court; and whoever*says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before 30the supremecourt; and whoever*says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the 31fieryhell.
23
"Thereforeif you are 32presenting your offering at the altar, and thereremember that your brotherhassomethingagainst you,
24
leave your offeringtherebefore the altar and go; first be 33reconciled to your brother, and thencome and present your offering.
25
"34Makefriendsquickly with your opponent at lawwhile you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
26
"Truly I say to you, 35you will not come out of thereuntil you have paid up the lastcent.
27
"36You have heard that it was said, '37YOU SHALL NOT COMMITADULTERY ';
28
but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman38with lust for her has alreadycommittedadultery with her in his heart.
29
"39If your righteyemakes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to loseone of the parts of your body, than* for your wholebody to be thrown into 40hell.
30
"41If your righthandmakes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than* for your wholebody to go into 42hell.
31
"It was said, '43WHOEVER*SENDS HIS WIFEAWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE ';
32
44but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commitadultery; and whoever*marries a divorcedwomancommitsadultery.
33
"Again, 45you have heard that the ancients were told, '46YOU SHALL NOT MAKEFALSEVOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.'
34
"But I say to you, 47makenooath at all, either by heaven, for it is 48the throne of God,
35
or by the earth, for it is the 49footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is 50THE CITY OF THE GREATKING.
36
"Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot*makeonehairwhiteorblack.
37
"But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes ' or 'No, no '; anything beyondthese is of 51evil.
38
"52You have heard that it was said, '53AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.'
39
"But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but 54whoeverslaps you on your rightcheek, turn the other to him also.
40
"If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coatalso.
41
"Whoeverforces you to go onemile, go with him two.
42
"55Give to him who asks of you, and do not turnaway from him who wants to borrow from you.
43
"56You have heard that it was said, '57YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR58and hate your enemy.'
44
"But I say to you, 59love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45
so that you may be 60sons of your Fatherwho is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendsrain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46
"For 61if you lovethose who love you, whatrewarddo you have? Do not even the taxcollectorsdo the same?
47
"If you greetonly your brothers, whatmore are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentilesdo the same?
48
"Therefore62you are to be perfect, as your heavenlyFather is perfect.
