1This is now, 1beloved, the secondletter I am writing to you in which I am 2stirring up your sinceremind by way of reminder,
2
that you should 3remember the wordsspokenbeforehand by 4the holyprophets and 5the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.
The Coming Day of the Lord
36Knowthisfirst of all, that 7in the lastdays8mockers will come with their mocking, 9followingafter their ownlusts,
4
and saying, "10Where is the promise of His 11coming? For ever since* the fathers12fellasleep, allcontinuesjust as it was 13from the beginning of creation."
5
For when they maintainthis, it escapes their notice that 14by the word of God the heavensexistedlongago and the earth was 15formed out of water and by water,
6
throughwhich16the world at that time was 17destroyed, being flooded with water.
7
But by His word18the presentheavens and earth are being reserved for 19fire, kept for 20the day of judgment and destruction of ungodlymen.
8
But do not let thisone fact escape your notice, 21beloved, that with the Lordoneday is like a thousandyears, and 22a thousandyearslikeoneday.
9
23The Lord is not slow about His promise, as somecountslowness, but 24is patienttoward you, 25not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
A New Heaven and Earth
10 But 26the day of the Lord27will comelike a thief, in which28the heavens29will passaway with a roar and the 30elements will be destroyed with intenseheat, and 31the earth and its works will be burned up.
11
Since allthesethings are to be destroyed in thisway, whatsort of people ought you to be in holyconduct and godliness,
12
32looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which33the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the 34elements will melt with intenseheat!
13
But according to His 35promise we are looking for 36newheavens and a newearth, 37in whichrighteousnessdwells.
14
38Therefore, 39beloved, since you look for thesethings, be diligent to be 40found by Him in peace, 41spotless and blameless,
15
and regard the 42patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also43our belovedbrotherPaul, 44according to the wisdomgiven him, wrote to you,
16
as also in all his letters, speaking in them of 45thesethings, 46in which are somethingshard to understand, which the untaught and 47unstabledistort, as they do also48the rest of the Scriptures, to their owndestruction.
17
You therefore, 49beloved, knowing this beforehand, 50be on your guardso* that you are not carriedaway by 51the error of 52unprincipledmen and 53fall from your ownsteadfastness,
18
but grow in the grace and 54knowledge of our 55Lord and SaviorJesusChrist. 56To Him be the glory, bothnow and to the day of eternity. Amen.
